Getting Started

It’s our 10th anniversary! Since 2008, Get Outdoors (GO) York! has encouraged thousands of children and families to be physically active by hunting for wooden posts placed in parks and along trails across York County. Do you remember our first program, Catch the Activity Bug? Or maybe you participated in the 2014 GO and Dig It Up! program, our most popular year? Whether you participated one year or for the entire decade, your steps helped GO Yorkers walk more than 160,000 miles. That’s like walking around the Earth six times! We’re excited to celebrate our 10-year milestone with you this summer!

Through a partnership between WellSpan Health and York County Libraries, we encourage you to GO and Build a Better World! this summer. Our community consists of different organizations that keep us healthy and safe, teach us about the past and educate us for the future, provide needed services, and help us enjoy life. These organizations and many more are needed for our community to be healthy and to grow.

This summer, GO York! helps you learn more about these community organizations. Thirty “landmarks” – wooden marker posts with a unique etching attached – have been hidden in various local, county and state parks. Take this book, as your blueprint, along with the rubbing sheet you received at your York County library and GO & Build a Better World!

When you find the landmark post, use a crayon or pencil to rub the unique etching onto your rubbing sheet. It proves you found it and is your key to winning some great prizes! See the Rewards and Prizes page on this website for details. Also, don’t forget to check out the rest of this website for additional information, including recommended library books, landmark facts, outdoor safety tips, summer parks programs, and more.

In addition to locating landmarks, you can learn how to Build a Better World! by visiting a York County library, checking out a few books about each landmark, and reading. When you read 800 minutes this summer, you’ll grow your reading and learning abilities! Read 20 minutes a day or complete an activity and then log them online at summerreading.yorklibraries.org to unlock cool badges and earn prizes! Get more badges after you visit parks, libraries, and attend programs. There are hundreds of free library programs planned just for you…attend one or all of them! You get to create your own super summer adventure! Go to summerreading.yorklibraries.org for all the details!

So get outdoors, have fun, and build a better world!
